In these anxious times, however, there is so much to set your mind racing in the nighttime hours.  Still, there is no better way of giving your immune system a boost, says  Matthew Walker, a neurologist Ph.D., in his book “Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams.”

Why is it so difficult to rest well, especially as you get older? “By the time you reach seventy years old, you will have lost 80 to 90 percent of your youthful deep sleep,” Walker writes.  Quality sleep is all the more vital, considering how important it is to maintain cognitive health: “A lack of sleep is fast becoming recognized as a key lifestyle factor in determining whether or not you will develop Alzheimer’s disease,” he notes.
